lpine Mountain Road Danger

aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.

The beautiful Alpine Mountains of Lilliland were a skier's delight. The treacherous aspects of the mountain were often forgotten in the marvel of the natural scenic beauty and splendor. To get to a certain part of Lilliland, there was a treacherous pass that the traveler had to be made aware of. The small but regular avalanches that covered the roadway often times caused an inexperienced driver to take a wrong turn and go off the road and sometimes even worse. A few times a driver would not just go off the road, but over the cliff. This was because the driver thought the road went a different way than it appeared. When the snow piled up on the side of the road, it looked like the driver should go around the snowdrifts. This was where the driver made a mistake.

The Baron was called upon to consider the matter. People visiting Lilliland were not expected to know some of the unique situations they could encounter on the roadways.

The Baron consulted with his chief advisor, Professor Hamblin. The Baron had always sought after the professor's years of experience. The professor studied the matter and the mountain roads' safety records and discovered that two or three accidents had been reported every year for the past 25 years on the most dangerous section of the mountain pass. He suggested to the Baron that large guard rails should be installed at the side of the road so that if a driver made the wrong turn, the guard rail would prevent him from going over the edge of the cliff. The Baron did just that and soon the mountain roads became very safe for all the drives. The safety of the people of Lilliland and its visitors had always been Baron Von Lodge's first concern.
