o Potters Field
|
ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.
While traveling together, Professor Hamblin, the Baron’s chief advisor, the Baron and his fiancée, Lady Angela of Alpine Castle, something caught their eye.
What was noticed was a cemetery of sorts, but it looked more like a plain old empty lot where waste was dumped. Professor Hamblin was asked about it and he said that it was the country’s potters’ field. All countries had them. It was where unclaimed dead bodies were buried if no one knew who they were.
The Baron quickly asked the Professor about his comment about all countries having a potters’ field. “Does Lilliland have a potters’ field that I do not know about?”
“Yes sir,” the Professor answered.
“Well, where in Lilliland is it?”
The Professor said that it was just east of the city dump, only about two miles away.
“Oh,” said the Baron with some surprise. “I do not like Lilliland having such a place to dishonor the dead.” He ordered that it be changed immediately upon their return to Lilliland.
The thought of having an unknown fellow human being placed in a plain wooden box or burlap bag to be buried in an unmarked area was just not right for Lilliland.
The changes that were ordered for potters’ field included surrounding the field with a fence of bushes, trees to be planted and flowers and a lawn which were to be maintained.
Most of all each person to be buried in the cemetery should receive an inter-faith religious service and buried in an attractive coffin, along with some appropriate flowers.
Every human being was entitled to a dignified cemetery burial and the name, Potters’ Field, would have to go.
The new name for Potters’ Field would be the Alpine Cemetery for All Beloved People.
The Baron, Lady Angela and the Professor liked the new cemetery for those forgotten people.
Alpine cemetery would raise the spirits of the citizens of Lilliland so if even one fell on hard times, he would be taken care of with dignity.
