ousin Kathy Learned a Sad Truth
|
ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.
While Cousin Kathy was visiting her aunt, Lady Angela of Alpine Castle, she was resting a broken foot that she got after she fell at the Lilliland train station.
While resting, she asked to use the Lilliland Library to find out as much as she could about her relatives from Lilliland before they moved to America.
“What made the decide to move to America, and what were they like when they lived in Lilliland?” Kathy wanted to find out firsthand.
Professor Hamblin and his staff assistant helped Kathy as much as they could while she was recuperating from her broken foot.
She was kept very busy and Lady Angela seemed very pleased with Kathy’s visit thus far. Then the Professor said that the staff assistant had to be reassigned to work on another project. The Professor began to taper off on his information about the background of Kathy’s relatives and why they left Lilliland.
It turned out that the Professor learned of some bad news that he wanted to temporarily withhold from Kathy. The Professor and Lady Angela had a private meeting regarding the news of Kathy’s relatives while they lived in Lilliland. It seemed that a close member of Kathy’s family worked as an important banker in Lilliland and was accused of embezzlement of funds. The case was very clear and privately Lady Angela’s staff was able to transfer fund to cover the amount of money that was taken.
The case was officially still open and Kathy could be called in by the bank officials for questioning. The police would be involved and Kathy could be in trouble if they felt that she was withholding any valuable information or that she was somehow benefiting from the stolen money.
Lady Angela was surprised at the news from the Professor about Kathy’s potential problem. It was quietly decided to tell Kathy and see if she wanted to take a midnight ride on horseback to the Swiss border and then return to America. She would not be committing any unlawful flight, just cutting her visit short.
Kathy did just that and left. She was guilty of nothing but it was a delicate situation for such a young woman to be in.
