aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.
It seemed that a favorite winter sport for all of Europe and Great Britain was skiing in the Alpine Mountains of Lilliland. Royal families would come and go so quickly that the Baron did not have a chance to know what royal families were in Lilliland.
With only skiing on their minds, the royal families were left on their own to enjoy their skiing trips. They all usually stayed at the Grand Lilliland Hotel which was very convenient to the ski lifts.
The Baron had never met the Duke and Duchess Staggerwalds from Liechtenstein, another beautiful country only 250 miles away. The Baron did not even know that they were staying at the hotel, nor did he know that the Duke had a skiing accident when he skied into a tree and knocked himself out for several hours. When he came to he could not remember some things about himself.
The Duke and Duchess Staggerwald rested for many days at the Grand Lilliland Hotel. After a month at the hotel, the manager gave them a bill. The Duke had a Swiss bank account to which only he knew the account number, except for a cousin back in Liechtenstein. As the Duchess did not know the account number she could not help. After the hotel manager came back two weeks later asking about the payment of their hotel bill, both the Duke and Duchess through him out of their suite of rooms and he was hurt in the incident. The manager got very angry and had them arrested for not paying their bill and for injuring him.
The Baron heard of the situation and asked his chief advisor, Professor Hamblin, to look into the matter. Were the Duke and Duchess from Liechtenstein really who they said they were? Did they really have a cousin with the Swiss bank account number as they had told the hotel manager? Could an unpleasant international situation be avoided? Could the hotel manager forgive the injury if the Duke fully apologized and was really still suffering from his memory loss from the skiing accident?
Professor Hamblin came back with a full report. They were indeed who they said they were and the cousin was on his way to the Duke with the bank account number that had been forgotten due to the skiing fall. The hotel manager was glad to accept the Duke and Duchess’ full apology.
The Duke and Duchess were released from jail and returned to the Grand Lilliland Hotel. They were also invited to Lilliland Castle to have dinner with the Baron, Lady Angela and Professor Hamblin. Everything ended very well and the Duke and Baron became friends.
