aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.
The Great War armistice was signed November 11, 1918, and everyone was happy.
The Baron was informed that someone was occupying one of the rescue cabins atop Alpine Mountain. When the ski patrol arrived and tried to rescue the person, they were shot at by someone inside the cabin. A crashed German fighter plane was spotted near the cabin. Therefore, it was assumed that a German fighter pilot, who did not know the war was just ended, was thinking that he was in France fighting off the enemy. Lilliland is a neutral country, like Switzerland, and does not take sides in any war. The Baron did not want any of his rescue team shot and they were told to keep their distance from the cabin.
The Baron summoned a German Air General to inform the pilot that the war was over and to come out of the cabin. The general tried just that, but the pilot thought it was a trick and kept shooting at anyone who came near the cabin. The general next informed the pilot by sending in some ski troopers from the German military, surrounded the cabin, and told him that the war was over. The pilot did not shoot at the ski troopers because they were wearing the military uniform of his country and spoke to him in his own language.
The pilot came out and met with the General who promptly had him fed, then examined by a medical team. Next, he was sent back to Germany to his family. The pilot was glad the war was over and said he was a farmer before the war and would be very happy to go back to his farm again.
