ady Angela’s Mystery Mouse

ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.

Lady Angela of Alpine Castle, the Baron’s fiancée, lives just a brief walk away from the Baron’s castle. There are many similarities between the two castles except for one thing. It seems that the staff in Lady Angela’s castle is deathly afraid of mice. Even though the mice are average size or extra small, the staff does not want to go near them. When a mouse is found, the gardener is called in to catch it and take it away. The staff will not even stay in the same room with a harmless dead mouse.

It seemed that there was a superstition that if someone got close to a mouse, great personal harm would come to that person and his loved ones. That fear was empty, groundless and meaningless, but it persisted.

One morning a small mouse was found outside Lady Angela’s bedroom. There was a great commotion and before the gardener could be called in to carry away the helpless and apparently dead mouse, the mouse had vanished. By the time the gardener arrived with a bag to carry the little mouse, it was nowhere to be found, near Lady Angela’s bedroom or in the hallway. That same event happened the exact same way several times, usually about once a week, but not on a regular basis.

Professor Hamblin, the Baron’s chief advisor and the Baron were asked what suggestions they may have to solve the problem of the mystery mouse. Some of Lady Angela’s staff threatened to quit their jobs until the mouse could be found and caught.

The Baron said that he would post a security guard in the hallway by the bedroom door to watch for the mystery mouse. After watching for several nights, the little mouse appeared. The little mouse then fell over and appeared to be dead. But then after a short period of time, the little mouse seemed to come back to life and scampered away.

Professor Hamblin asked a veterinarian about this unusual occurrence. The veterinarian said that one reason came to mind and that was that the mouse was suffering from a type of mental seizure, like a fit. Then, after a few the minutes, the seizure fades and the mouse is back to normal again.

To confirm this diagnosis, the mouse had to be gently captured and brought to the veterinarian’s office for a close examination. The diagnosis was correct.

Lady Angela was now faced with the problem of how to treat the mouse after the mystery was solved. The staff, learning of the solution, agreed not to resign. Eventually the mouse was provided with a lovely place to live in the barn.
