he Brown vs. White Eggshell Solution
|
aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.
It seems that every Saturday, at the farmers' market, the great debate continued as to which egg was better, the ones with the white shells or the ones with the brown shells. When the debate nearly turned into a fistfight, the Baron was called in to address the matter.
The Baron summoned Professor Hamblin down from his Alpine Mountain retreat. The Baron asked the Professor to solve the problem once and for all time. The Professor thought for a few days and then said the matter could be solved with a test. He would select 22 people from the farmers' market who buy eggs regularly and let them taste the eggs not knowing which type of egg it was. Professor Hamblin would also have Baron Von Lodge and Lady Angela of Alpine Castle participate in the contest.
Secretly, the Professor had 24 eggs hard-boiled. There were one dozen eggs with brown shells and one dozen with white shells. The eggs were cut in half and placed on a dish that was numbered from 1 to 24 for all of the contestants. Each contestant would eat both eggs and then score which egg tasted better. They did not know that all of the eggs on the right side of the plate were one kind and those on the left side were the other kind. That was kept a secret until the test ended.
After the contest was over, the final tally was made and Professor Hamblin made the announcement. Twelve egg-tasters preferred the egg on the left side of the plate and twelve preferred the egg on the right side of the plate. It was a tie.
The Baron thanked the Professor for his assistance in solving the problem once and for all. Everyone at the farmers' market in Lilliland was happy again.
