ittle Rock Story

ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.

The Baron was telling Lady Angela of Alpine Castle, his fiancée, an interesting story.

It seems that there were two young noblemen, Sir William and Sir Frederick, who were in a tavern in South France. They were drinking a little too much and decided to have a sword fight over a pretty young lady that they hardly knew. They decided to fight each other to win the lady’s hand.

The two men went outside of the tavern and began to fight with their swords. It was a very equal fight at first. They both had the same skills in sword fighting.

Finally, Sir William stepped backward and as he did, his ankle turned on a small rock that was in the way. He suddenly fell down and dropped his sword. This gave the other swordsman, Sir Frederick, a clean thrust opportunity toward his foe’s heart, and that would end the fight.

Suddenly, Sir Fredrick heard the lady, whom they were fighting over, shout, “Freddie!” Sir Frederick stopped mid-thrust, and thought that there was only one person in the world who called him “Freddie.” And that person was his long lost sister, Ruth. Sir Frederick stopped in his tracks and took both swards and broke them both in half. This fight was not going to be solved because of the accidental positioning of a harmless rock.

Then Sir Frederick said to Sir William, “You win, because I cannot win and marry my long lost sister, Ruth.”

Both Sir William and Sir Frederick, along with Lady Ruth, laughed because now Sir Frederick would be the brother-in-law to Sir William.

Thank goodness for the little rock that changed the course of history for those three young people.

Lady Angela looked at the Baron and said, “That was a nice story, but are you sure that someone did not just make it up?”

The Baron replied, “It does sound made up, doesn’t it?”
