ady Angela's Plaid

ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.

Lady Angela, the Baron’s fiancée, lived in her large Alpine Castle. Lady Angela was very proud of her home and always kept it very attractive and decorated with different objects. Her flower gardens were one of her most prized possessions.

On a recent trip to Scotland with the Baron, she became very interested in the plaid designs that she saw. Each clan or family had its own plaid design. All of the plaids were very well done and very attractive.

Upon her return to Lilliland, she asked whether Lilliland had a plaid design for the country. The Baron said that he was not aware of any plaid designed for Lilliland.

“Well, Lady Angela said, “I’m going to have a plaid designed for Alpine Castle.” If everyone liked it, she would share it with all of Lilliland.

What might be the colors for the plaid design? At first she liked black and blue. But the Baron said that it reminded him of how the losing team looked after a soccer game.

“Okay. Well, if not black and blue, how about green and blue? Green for the meadows of Lilliland and blue for the skies above Lilliland.”

“That sounds fine,” the Baron said.

Lady Angela set up a contest for anyone in Lilliland who wanted to submit a design for the plaid pattern. The prize would be a week’s stay in the Alpine Castle as the personal guest of Lady Angela.

There were about forty designs submitted and Lady Angela asked the Baron to be the judge. The Baron said that he would defer that honor to Professor Hamblin. The Professor said that he would accept the honor if he could choose six people who were Lilliland citizens to make a preliminary choice. Then, if there were a tie, he would select the winner.

All entries had to be blue and green. Other colors would not be acceptable for this contest.

The committee met and chose one of the plaid designs and the Professor agreed and submitted the design to the Baron. The Baron gave the design to Lady Angela.

Lady Angela liked the selection and ordered yards and yards of the design for clothing and castle decorations. The Baron liked the design and ordered a sports jacket made in the plaid design.

Everyone in Lilliland seemed happy with the plaid design.
