rofessor Hamblin is Missing
|
ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.
The Baron’s castle is like most of the other castles in Europe – an interesting structure. Originally designed and built to ward off enemy attacks, the castles had large thick walls and moats. However, during more contemporary times, the castles were redesigned to be more comfortable for the inhabitants. The moats were filled in and replaced by trees and flowers. The buildings were still cold and drafty. Different types of heating systems were developed. Modern plumbing was high on the list of comfortable improvements. In fact, the renovated castles resembled more of a manor house than anything else.
Professor Hamblin, the Baron’s chief advisor, required more space and the Baron suggested that the east wing of the castle, which was used as secondary guest quarters, be made available for his requirements.
The Professor began preparing the east wing as an extension of his library, office and living quarters. This undertaking involved some major changes in the layout of the rooms.
But one day, the Professor could not be found. The Baron was deeply concerned and had everyone in the castle looking for the Professor. Finally, one of the searchers thought that he heard a faint groaning behind one of the walls in the east wing. This was in the area where the Professor was last seen.
The wall had to be cut away enough to see behind it. After some careful removal of some pieces, further inspection revealed that it was the Professor groaning behind the wall. The Professor was able to speak softly and said that he accidentally found a secret trap door in the east wing and fell into it. He knocked his head and hurt his leg. The secret area was a hiding place in olden days for anyone, should the castle be attacked. The secret door was to the left side of the fireplace and had a concealed latch that opened the trap door to the space that he fell into.
The Professor was carefully lifted out of the space and after a few days of rest, was back at work on the east wing, preparing his new office space. He said that the secret passages were such a secret that no one knew where they were located. The space was so concealed that it was never recorded on any plan of the castle for fear that it would get into the wrong hands.
The Professor concluded that living in a castle had its many surprises.
