ucky Pinecones

ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.

Professor Hamblin, while talking with the Baron and his fiancée, Lady Angela of Alpine Castle, were discussing luck.

It seemed that some people were born with a lot of luck and others seemed to be shortchanged in that department. Perhaps it was a matter of attitude. If you felt lucky, then maybe more luck would come your way. If you felt down and unlucky, then bad luck might come your way. It might be called a self-fulfilling prophecy.

“We’ve talked about this many times before,” the Professor added.

A man named Bruce Bennett claimed to be a very lucky person. Everything he did he did well and he credited it to his lucky star. He claimed that the reason for his luck was because he had a nice collection of Lilliland pinecones all around his house. Pinecones were also in nearly every room, he said. That was why he was so lucky.

Other people, hearing this story about Bruce Bennett, began doing the same thing and kept some pinecones inside their homes. The natural fragrance of the pinecones certainly made everything smell very nice.

Whether the pinecones brought good luck or not, some people said everything smelled like Christmas all year long. Others said it smelled like clean outdoor mountain freshness.

The Professor said that there was obviously no connection between pinecones and good luck. However, if things smelled nicer, then a person might have a more pleasant attitude. And getting back to attitude, the proper attitude that good luck brings might improve the chances of bringing more good luck into one’s life.

The Baron commented that he noticed that the Professor had a nice collection of pinecones in his office. “Is that for good luck, or because of the pleasant fragrance?” he asked the Professor.

“Both,” the Professor answered. Lady Angela said that she also keeps a collection of pinecones in the reception room of Alpine Castle because the fragrance seemed to make visitors more welcomed.

The Baron agreed and ordered a collection of pinecones for his office.

“I, too, like the fragrance and to have two friends like both of you may mean that I am a very lucky person.”
