r. Whiskers, No More Gifts Please

ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.

When the Baron asked Lady Angela of Alpine Castle about her new cat, Mr. Whiskers, was doing she said, “Well, o.k. I guess.”

Lady Angela explained that Mr. Whiskers slept in her bedroom by the fireplace. Sometimes there was a little dead mouse on the rug.

Lady Angela believed that when Mr. Whiskers went outside he liked to hunt for mice and bring them back to her as a sort of gift or present.

Since Lady Angela did not like to have mice in her castle, the housekeeper was told about the problem. She was told that they did not want any mice in the castle and perhaps Mr. Whiskers should be kept as an indoor cat and not allowed to go outside. The housekeeper agreed and did just that for the time being.

After several days had passed, Lady Angela was very pleased not to find any mice on the cat’s rug in her bedroom. “Well, it looks like that problem is finally solved,” she said.

But the following week, another mouse appeared on Mr. Whiskers’ rug. Lady Angela called in the housekeeper who assured Lady Angela that the cat had not gone outside at any time.

“Where did that new mouse come from if not from outside on the castle grounds?”

Finally, the Baron suggested that the mouse Mr. Whiskers had found was in the food storage area next to the kitchen.

An investigation found that Mr. Whiskers had indeed found a mouse in the food storage area.

Lady Angela’s opinion of Mr. Whiskers quickly changed from his being a problem cat to being a very helpful cat in keeping the castle mouse free. When the Baron heard how helpful Mr. Whiskers was, he was please and said that the little fellow was really earning his keep.

Mr. Whiskers was basically a very quiet cat, but when there was a mouse problem he was there to be of help.
