Small Country

ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.

Lilliland was a small country because it was 20 miles by 16 miles from end to end with a total of only 320 square miles. The population stayed around 82,000 people.

There have been many critics of the Baron and the royal family of Lilliland for many years. Many of the critics seemed correct making very good points. For one thing, the Baron’s ancestors who founded Lilliland by treaty from France a century earlier, owned everything, land, lakes, mountains, they owned it all. The citizens did not own the land, they leased it for a period of 100 years. The terms of the lease were very liberal.

Immigration to and from Lilliland was not easy. To live in Lilliland, you had to be born there, or married into a family that was born there. All citizens must be gainfully employed at doing something that was beneficial for the society.

The critics said that the only person who does not have a real job was the Baron himself. He just sat around and supervised the country, which seemed to run by itself. It was also argued that Professor Hamblin, the chief advisor to the Baron, was the real brain behind the success of Lilliland. Everybody loved and respected Lady Angela of Alpine Castle, the Baron’s fiancée, for her natural charm and beauty. That left the Baron to wander around his castle wondering what was going to happen next.

In reality, the Baron, like his father before him, was a very kind and thoughtful leader and kept the best interests of the country and its citizens first in his mind and heart.

Would Lilliland survive in the future? Politically, it was like Switzerland, a neutral country. But no one knew for sure what tomorrow would bring to a small country near Switzerland called Lilliland.
