aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.

One of the Baron’s chief jobs was making sure that Lilliland was clean and attractive at all times. Visitors from all over the world like to visit Lilliland for the skiing in the Alpine Mountains and sailing on the large and beautiful Castle Lake.

Castle Lake was so large that it was very difficult for the Lilliland Lake Patrol to see everywhere. But the people of Lilliland wanted to keep the lake clean so that the beautiful and graceful swans could swim about in clean clear lake water.

However, as of late there had been some sightings of boaters throwing garbage into the lake.

When the Baron heard about this unlawful garbage disposal and that some of the fish were dying from the pollution of the garbage, he became greatly concerned. He called in his chief advisor, Professor Hamblin, to investigate the situation.

The Professor had the Lake Patrol collect the garbage for analysis and to mark the location on a large map of the lake where the garbage was found.

The garbage collection indicated that the garbage came from the Grand Lilliland Hotel. The people of the hotel said that they contracted with a garbage collection company to remove the garbage and to haul it away to be placed in a proper landfill location far enough away from anyone to see in Lilliland.

The people of the Grand Lilliland Hotel joined Professor Hamblin to see how the garbage got into Castle Lake. Secretly, a hotel garbage pickup was followed, not to the landfill area as contracted, but to a barge at the farthest end of Castle Lake to be loaded and taken out onto the lake to be dumped illegally.

The barge operators were caught and brought to justice. They were fined, put in prison for a short time, the barge was taken away from them, and they would never be permitted to sail on Castle Lake again.

The Baron said that some people might consider the punishment harsh but the entire livelihood and economy of the people of Lilliland was based on tourists enjoying their vacations in Lilliland. This illegal dumping in Castle Lake hurt every family one way or another.

Castle Lake soon returned to its former sparkling condition with clean fresh pure water as before and the swans seemed to enjoy their lake even more.
