eiling Fans

aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.

The Baron is very proud of Lilliland Castle although it had been evolving more as a country manor house than a medieval castle.

The Baron was pleased when tourists strolled around the castle grounds and took pictures of the beautiful flowers in bloom in the castle’s gardens. Since the castle was on Castle Lake there were many scenic views including sailboats on the lake.

The Baron knew firsthand that the castle was very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, and sitting next to the lake it always had a problem of dampness.

` Professor Hamblin, the Baron’s chief advisor, had a suggestion to make Lilliland Castle more comfortable without changing the appearance. His suggestion was to install ceiling fans throughout the castle.

The Baron said that he would like to have some ceiling fans installed in a few rooms on a trial basis. The Baron’s study, his bedroom, dining room, kitchen and grand hallway would be used to try out the fans.

A warm summer was predicted and it would be an excellent time to test the Professor’s idea about improving the castle’s comfort.

After a few hot summer days the Baron quickly adjusted to being in the rooms with the fans rather than being in the rooms without ceiling fans.

Lady Angela of Alpine Castle, the Baron’s fiancée, like the ceiling fans too and ordered them installed in her castle as soon as possible.

The Professor said that the fan blades could be reversed so that the air blew one way in the summer and the opposite way in the winter. That way air would be moved up for the summer and down for the winter.

The Baron was pleased with the Professor’s suggestion and after a brief time, everyone hardly noticed the ceiling fans at all. That is, except when they were turned off and the castle became uncomfortable.

Things in Lilliland seemed to go better when the Baron and Lady Angela were cool and comfortable.
