ld Wooden Covered Bridge
|
aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.
Lilliland Castle was located on the shore of the very large and beautiful Castle Lake. Toward the far end of the lake stood an old wooden covered footbridge. The bridge was very old and had weathered many a storm. The bridge was well decorated with paintings and carved figures representing an era of great craftsmanship.
But now the bridge was no longer enjoying the fine reputation as a place for lovers to pause and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings. The old bridge’s reputation was now based on a rumor that started several years ago. A man crossed the bridge one night during a mild, foggy rainstorm and was never seen again. Since that time the old bridge was believed to have a curse. People thought that if they crossed the bridge at night alone during a rainstorm they, too, might never be seen again.
The Baron did not believe for one moment that the bridge was haunted, nor did he believe that some man disappeared from the bridge. The Baron called in his chief advisor Professor Hamblin to find out what really happened at the bridge and to the missing man.
Professor Hamblin contacted an associate from Cambridge University and another from the University of Paris to help unlock the mysterious disappearance.
After nearly a month of investigation the mystery was solved. In his report to the Baron, Professor Hamblin and his two university associates discovered that the man, as he crossed the bridge, slipped and hit his head on one of the wooden beams and developed amnesia and lost his identity. He was later found in a mental hospital in Switzerland. The mystery was solved and the reputation of the lovely old wooden footbridge was restored. This made everyone in Lilliland very happy.
