illiland Flag

aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.

Often the Baron was asked to address a conference of dignitaries either at Lilliland Castle or the Lilliland Grand Hotel. Since the Grand Hotel had a large conference center, the Baron preferred that location.

Many delegates liked to come to the Lilliland area for the sports and recreational activities. Skiing in the winter and sailing the summer, and in-between hiking trails, camping, horseback riding, or just taking in the scenery and relaxing.

The Baron was frequently asked about the Lilliland flag. It had a swan above the name "Lilliland" on a light blue background. What did the flag represent to the royal family and to the citizens?

The overall impression was to be that Lilliland was a very peaceful and tranquil country that, like its neighbor Switzerland, was neutral regarding war. The light blue background represented the light blue water of the large Castle Lake that the castle overlooked. The majestic swans in Castle Lake were an example to everyone of natural grace and splendor. The name "Land of Lillian" was given hundreds of years ago when Baroness Lillian became the first monarch of the country.

The Baroness Lillian loved the country for its natural beauty and paths that were perfect for her favorite pastime, horseback riding. Her husband, the first Baron Von Lodge, gave her a beautiful horse, which by a strange coincidence was also named Lillian. The horse was highly trained and they decided to keep the "Lillian" name because it might take too long to retrain the horse to a new name like "Sally" or "Beverly." But that was another story.

This was basically the reason for the flag of Lilliland. When guests and visitors looked at the flag they would look forward to seeing the real, beautiful swans swimming and strutting around Castle Lake which was the way the Baron liked it to be.

There had always been a caretaker on the castle staff who was in charge of the care and feeding of the swans. At the end of each year he was responsible for counting all the swans in Lilliland and each year it was very important that the same number of swans, plus some new additions, be tallied so that everyone knew that all was well in Lilliland.
