illiland Has No Homeless Problem
|
aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.
It was reported to the Baron that several cities in Europe had a problem with homeless people sleeping in the public parks, begging for money from citizens, and generally making people feel uncomfortable.
The Baron was very happy that the homeless problem did not exist in Lilliland. The Baron was always concerned that something should be done to prevent the problem from developing in the future.
The Baron consulted with his chief advisor, Professor Hamblin, on this matter. The professor said that prevention was to make certain that the safeguards were always in place. Some of the safeguards were that the restaurants donated the unsold and unserved food to a rescue center. The Lilliland Rescue Center offered, free of charge, a warm meal and a bed to anyone who wished to come to the shelter in need of these services. The rescue shelter was in an old unused hotel. The hotel was supported by the Baron and ran in a dignified manner. Clothes and free haircuts were also available so that the guests really did not look any different from anyone else. The guests of the rescue shelter were given respect and understanding until they could get back on their feet, or until a relative could be found to assist them.
The Baron and the professor believed that it was easier to solve a small problem before it became a big problem. A warm bed, hearty meal, and a kind word of encouragement were the solution for over half of the people who temporarily found themselves in a homeless situation. When they got back on their feet, they remembered the help they received and were very happy that people cared about other people in Lilliland.
