ometime ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.
The Baron, his fiancée, and the Professor often met in an attempt to make Lilliland into a more enjoyable vacation spot for tourists. It was a fact of life that tourists promoted revenue and revenue helped run the country.
Many of the tourist promotion signs showed pictures of smiling faces. Yet, the Baron, Lady Angela and Professor Hamblin wondered where those faces were when the tourists arrived. “We have got to make sure that the tourists see smiling faces when they get off the riding trails, in the hotels, the ski slopes, while sailing, hiking and all the other places in between.”
“One of the reasons that citizens do not smile, although they are helpful, is because they often forget that their everyday smiles relate directly to tourism’s success,” the Professor reminded the Baron.
“Everyone who vacations in Lilliland, then leaves for home, is asked upon their homecoming, the same question. ‘How was your vacation and did you have a nice time?’ It is a standard question that is always asked. The questioner is thinking, ‘Would I like to take my next vacation there?’
“This is where the Lilliland citizen comes in, by smiling and being helpful. If a tourist is spotted being robbed, the thief was really taking money out of every citizen’s pocket by having someone think badly about his Lilliland experience.
“The quicker the thief is brought to justice and the tourist’s money or jewels are returned, the less the public relations are damaged.
“One way to correct this was to have tourists treated specially. It took smiling faces on posters to bring tourists to Lilliland and we need posters to show citizens that their smiles are very good for business. Remind Lilliland citizens to put on a happy face. It makes a difference and helps everything.”
The Baron, Lady Angela and the Professor all agreed on this solution to help everything about Lilliland.
In restaurants and hotels, one calls it hospitality management. The owner of the establishment cares what happens when the customer steps inside the front door and the Baron cares what happens when people step inside the country of Lilliland.
