lamorous Deception
|
ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.
Lady Angela of Alpine Castle was telling the Baron about twin young ladies named Allison and Alicia. They both went by the nickname Al. They liked being twins but did not like the public to know that they were twins.
Alicia and Allison never went out in public together. They still dressed alike even though they were 20 years old. They had both inherited wealth so they did not have to go to work but stayed most of the time in their large comfortable home with beautiful grounds and two servants. The servants were told never to say that they worked for twins.
When they socialized, they both would date the same young man but not tell him which of the twins he was seeing. They would compare notes very carefully as to what was said so that there was some consistency in their behavior.
One day a friend introduced one of the twins to a man who was visiting from college. First, it was Alicia, and the next time he was in town, it was Allison. He never knew which twin he was dating. The only clue as to the difference between the twins was that one had a small birthmark about the size of a very small pearl on her right wrist. But since they both wore long sleeved blouses, the birthmark was not visible.
No secret can last forever. On one visit by the young suitor, a marriage proposal was made. Alicia was on the date at the time and she was caught by surprise and did not know what to say to this very charming man. So she said that she would think it over for a few days and have an answer for him on their next date.
In the meantime, the jeweler who knew the girls were twins, asked the suitor, while he was selecting an engagement ring, which of the girls it was for. Alicia or Allison? The suitor was surprised but the jeweler added that they were identical in every way except for the small birthmark on the right wrist.
During the next date, the young man stalled on the wedding proposal and glanced at Alicia’s wrist. No birthmark. Then during the next date he glanced at Allison’s wrist. There was a tiny birthmark.
The suitor was embarrassed and sent a not to the twins’ home expressing the fact that his heart was broken over this deception and did not want to be a part of their charade anymore.
He never returned again. Both Alicia and Allison lived alone in their large comfortable home all alone for the rest of their lives.
