ecret Agent Note

ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.

While the Baron was in conference with his chief advisor, Professor Hamblin, a messenger arrived with a sealed envelope. It was delivered by special courier from the diplomatic center of another country.

The Professor read the note to the Baron asking for a secret meeting between the Professor and a secret agent. The meeting would take place the next day at noon in the lobby of the Lilliland Hotel. The Professor should be in some disguise so that the public would not recognize him as a top ranking Lilliland official. The secret agent would be dressed like a typical tourist carrying a brown attaché case. The agent would contact the Professor, but the Professor should not attempt to contact the agent.

The time of the meeting came and went and it appeared that the secret agent did not show up. Two days later a note from the agent said that he was there at the meeting place in the lobby of the hotel but he felt that he was followed and watched, so he could not give the message to the Professor. They must try again at noon the following Wednesday in the hotel lobby. This time they must not speak to each other, but the Professor should only ask the agent to borrow his newspaper. The secret message would be in a piece of paper folded inside the newspaper. This meeting took place and was successful.

The Baron was shown the message later that afternoon. The message was that since war clouds were forming in Europe, both sides were building a stockpile of bombs. It seemed that there was a mine in Lilliland that had an abundance of the mineral that made the bombs more explosive. Both sides would be trying to obtain the use of the mine for their war preparations.

Since Lilliland was a neutral country, like Switzerland, they wanted no part of any war effort. “We are a neutral country, and that is that,” said the Baron.

“A plan must be developed to discourage the other countries in their efforts to obtain the mineral. The plan that might work is to first evaluate the situation. It seems that there is only one mine and one mineshaft. If the mine is closed and the shaft sealed, then that might discourage either side from taking the mineral by force.”

The plan was put into effect. The mineshaft was sealed and completely covered over with plants that would make it appear as though the mine was never there. All references to the mine in records were destroyed and once completed, the plan worked out very well.
