illiland Border Problems
|
ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.
One of the most important things about visiting Lilliland was the mountain-fresh air and the large clean and blue Lilliland Lake.
When the weather was not favorable, tourists tended to stay away until the snow was just right for skiing and the lake was ideal for sailing. The hiking trails and horseback riding paths must also have favorable weather conditions.
Lilliland was faced with another concern that affected tourists. In the country near the northeast border, a factory was built that emitted soot. When the wind blew toward Lilliland the soot drifted into the Lilliland area.
People came to Lilliland expecting to breathe the crystal clear and refreshing mountain air, and instead it was tainted with the smell of industrial pollution.
The Baron asked Professor Hamblin what could be done about the problem. The Professor thought for a while and said that since the factory was in another country, there was probably not much that could be done. “But, if we feel it is affecting our tourism economy, then we must have a plan.”
Finally, a few months later, word reached the Baron that a second factory was being built next to the first one. A diplomat, under the Professor’s new secret plan, was sent to the capitol of the neighboring country to inquire about the first and second factories.
The leader of the other country said that because Lilliland purchased so much of the materials produced by the factory, it was built near Lilliland.
The Baron told the Professor to tell the other country that if they did not stop production on the second factory and move the first one out of the area that affected Lilliland, they would cease purchasing any more of the products. The plan worked and the factory was closed and moved. It did not do any harm that the Baron had influential friends in England, France, Germany, and the United States, who would have joined in the boycott of the factory that was polluting the wonderful air in Lilliland.
