eeding the Wild Birds

ome time ago Baron Von Lodge was the head of a small country near Switzerland known as Lilliland.

A lot of people came to Lilliland for the sporting activities such as skiing, hiking, sailing, horseback riding and many others, including golf and tennis.

However, one of the most popular activities that people engaged in without much thought was feeding the wild birds. Lilliland had many beautiful birds that came each year and seemed to just stay permanently.

The reason that the birds stayed was because everyone seemed to feed them scraps. Each home had a separate dish in which to save scraps to feed the birds. Restaurants also saved scraps to give to people who wished to feed the birds. Both kitchens at Lady Angela’s and the Baron’s castles saved scraps of food for the birds.

Since there were no guns allowed in Lilliland, no one could shoot any of the wild birds. There was no season for sportsmen to shoot anything. This was a very strict rule that was never broken because everyone was watching and jealously protecting the birds.

The birds seemed to sense this environment of safety and relished in it. The birds were beautiful and were a sight to behold. The wild geese and swans on the lake to the little wrens in the mountains.

How this effort of feeding and protecting the birds came about no one knew for sure. Some folklore believed that the presence of wild birds was a sign that all was right with Mother Nature.

Other people did not necessarily believe in all the folklore tales and simply commented, “Who would want to live in a place that did not have beautiful birds to watch and hear sing?”

No one would admit to coming to Lilliland just to see and feed the birds. They had to say something that sounded bolder, such a mountain climbing or sailing all around the lake or something else more daring.

But when all was said and done, everyone in Lilliland shared the same love and concern for feeding and watching the beautiful birds knowing that they would be there for future generations to enjoy.

Some newer people to Lilliland wanted to propose a bird-hunting season to keep the excessive proliferation of birds to a limit. The people who made this proposal were not spoken to by the long-time residents of Lilliland. The last anyone heard was that they had moved away. People loved feeding the birds, and that was that.
