aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.

The Baron realized that tourism was the most important part of Lilliland’s economic structure. Many of the jobs related directly to visitors coming to Lilliland for winter and summer vacations.

The Grand Hotel was large enough to accommodate most of the guests although some visitors like to stay at some of the smaller hotels and bed-and-breakfast family-run inns.

There were enough restaurants to make visiting Lilliland an interesting dining experience. The Baron, however, who loved Oriental cuisine, missed not having a Chinese restaurant in all of Lilliland.

Every time the Baron and Lady Angela were in London, they went to the Chinese restaurant called The Friendly Inn. The food and service were wonderful. It was the only time that the Baron got to use his abilities with chopsticks. After all, the Baron would say that there were more people in the world who ate with chopsticks than with knives, forks and spoons. He felt that everyone should master the technique of eating with chopsticks.

The Baron met with the owners of The Friendly Inn to invite them to open up a branch of their restaurant in Lilliland. The Baron said he would provide a fine location that he owned and would let them use it for two years rent-free if they agreed.

The Baron reviewed the proposal with his chief advisor, Professor Hamblin, formerly of Cambridge University. It was the Professor who first took the young Baron to The Friendly Inn many years ago and also told him that he had to learn the proper way to eat with chopsticks if he wanted to become a world traveler and good diplomat.

Lilliland got its first Chinese restaurant and everyone was very please with the arrangement. The Baron, Lady Angela, and the Professor became regular customers at The Friendly Inn and all the citizens were very happy with the new experience of a Chinese restaurant.
