aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.
While Professor Hamblin, the Baron’s chief advisor, had an apartment in Lilliland Castle, he preferred to live in his chateau near the top of the Alpine Mountains. Professor Hamblin believed that the fresh mountaintop air helped him to think more clearly.
The Baron became concerned when the very punctual Professor missed his weekly meeting with the Baron. A messenger was sent to the chateau to find out why the Professor missed the meeting. The messenger returned with a not from the Professor stating that he was called away on immediate family business. The Baron looked closely at the note and it appeared to be genuine and in the Professor’s handwriting.
A week went by without a word from the Professor. Then a note arrived at the castle addressed to the Baron. The note said that the Professor had been kidnapped and being held from a ransom of $100,000.
The Baron gave the note to the castle security officers and a plan was developed. The plan was to contact agents in all the other European countries to be on the lookout for kidnappers.
The plan was to first have the ransom paid and get the Professor back safely. Then go after the kidnappers.
The ransom money was paid and the Professor was returned safely. The ransom was paid with marked money and the Professor met with a Lilliland artist to have drawings made of the faces of the kidnappers.
Several months later, the Professor noticed that the pictures of the kidnappers were in the newspaper. They had been caught in France. The marked money was returned in full, and another great tragedy was averted.
Reluctantly, the Professor agreed to have a security guard assigned to his mountaintop chateau for security and everyone’s peace of mind. That satisfied everyone in Lilliland, especially the Baron.
