anoe Race

aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.

The Baron looked forward to his early morning horseback rides along the paths next to Castle Lake with his fiancée Lady Angela of Alpine Castle. Since the two castles were only three miles apart, it was an ideal ride. The view along the bridle paths was quite picturesque.

While they were riding, they would often comment about the young couples paddling lazily in their canoes. It was a leisurely way to spend the summer days in Lilliland.

The Baron had an idea about holding a canoe race for couples only. The race would start from the pier in front of Alpine Castle and end at the pier of Lilliland Castle.

Lady Angela thought the canoe race was a fine idea and said yes regarding the use of the pier in front of her castle.

Lady Angela inquired as to what a suitable prize would be for the winners. After the Baron thought for a few moments he suggested a new canoe would be fine. Lady Angela agreed with the prized idea.

The canoe race was announced and there were plenty of couples that wanted to enter the races.

The day dawned clear and beautiful and all of the participants lined up in their canoes in front of the dock at Alpine Castle. Lady Angela was the official starter and as she blew the starting whistle, the racers were off.

The Baron and his chief advisor Professor Hamblin were at the finish line in front of Lilliland Castle. The race was a success and everyone who started in the race finished. The couple that came in first received as a prize a new canoe. The Baron held a reception in the garden for all the contestants.

The winning couple had been close friends when they first entered the contest. The more they practiced, the close they got romantically. The day of the race they announced their engagement.

Everyone was happy for the young couple. The Baron and Lady Angela were contacted several weeks after the race by the winning couple to ask permission to be married in their new canoe in front of Lilliland Castle. The Baron said that would be fine.

After the ceremony Lady Angela offered the newlyweds a suite of rooms at Alpine Castle for their honeymoon.
