rofessor Hamblin's Complaint
|
aron Von Lodge was the head of a small country known as Lilliland near Switzerland. The time was the early 1900s.
Professor Hamblin had been the Baron’s chief advisor for many years. Before becoming chief advisor, he was tutor to the young Baron and Lady Angela of Alpine Castle. Although the Baron was a few years older than Lady Angela, they were close enough in age that they could be taught together by Professor Hamblin. Before the Professor became tutor to the royal family, he had been a professor at Cambridge University in England and several other prominent universities in France and England.
Now that Professor Hamblin was getting older, he spent most of his time away from Lilliland Castle in his Alpine Mountain chateau. The chateau was high up in the mountains.
The older the Professor got, the more he wanted to stay at his chateau. His agreement with the Baron was he would always be available to offer suggestions to help solve Lilliland’s problems if the problems were important.
The Professor complained that the Baron was requesting his services for too many small problems and it was wearing him down. The Baron had recently agreed to restrict requests for the Professor’s services on important issues of state.
Quite frankly, the Professor was beginning to feel that the Baron was just lonely in his huge Lilliland Castle.
One day the Professor received word that the Baron was walking around the castle wearing his ceremonial robe and crown of gold. The Professor thought this was in very poor taste and asked the Baron if it were true. The Baron said that the winter was very cold and the gold and velvet crown kept his head warm. The long robe was the warmest piece of clothing that he had.
The Professor suggested that the Baron order a very warm hat and coat from Russia. Russian winters were really cold compared to the mild winters in Lilliland. The Professor rethought his position and told the Baron he would become more available to his lifelong friend and also to the lovely Lady Angela of Alpine Castle.
